James Varieur is a classically trained guitarist living in the Portland area. James’s performances are an eclectic blend of music from Bach, Villa-Lobos, Lauro, Piazzolla, to Ralph Towner, as well as arrangements of Jazz tunes and pop melodies.
James holds degrees in: Automotive Technology (yes it's true!) but more recently and importantly a Bachelor of Music from Western Oregon University. James studied classical guitar with the legendary master of the harp guitar John Doan. Simultaneously, James took up Jazz guitar studies with Jazz axeman Christopher Woitach, and composition studies with Dr. Arnold Friedman. James has also had master classes with notable teachers Adam Holzman, international soloist and recording artist William Kanengiser, as well as jazz guitar legend John Stowell. Mr. Varieur is also the recipient of the 2003 Laurel Music Scholarship and 2005 Music Department Scholarship Award
from Western Oregon University.
James currently performs throughout Portland, Keeps a busy studio where he teaches privately.
When not teaching and performing James is kept busy composing, arranging, updating his website,
and when free is probably studying nature somewhere and hanging out with Coco the dog.
